Fellowships
EdJS supports doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows, both funded by an endowment from the Jim Joseph Foundation.
Structured like a research lab, EdJS engages students and fellows in ongoing projects from the moment they arrive, working collaboratively with faculty and with each other across all phases of the research and publishing process. Students and partners meet regularly to workshop projects, discuss pressing issues, partner on writing, and explore frontiers of research in Jewish education.
Doctoral Study
Doctoral study at EdJS sits inside the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Students take the full range of GSE coursework and work alongside faculty on active research from their first quarter. Every admitted student is fully funded through an endowed Jim Joseph Fellowship: five years of tuition plus a stipend.
Areas of study
Students apply to one of the GSE's three academic areas and concentrate in Education and Jewish Studies alongside it:
- Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education (CTE)
- Developmental and Psychological Sciences (DAPS)
- Social Sciences, Humanities, and Interdisciplinary Policy Studies in Education (SHIPS)
Two cross-area specializations are also available within any of the three: Learning Sciences and Technology Design (LSTD), and Race, Inequality, and Language in Education (RILE).
Where our graduates go
Nine students have earned their PhDs since 2017. They now hold research chairs and lead research teams at Brandeis, Tulane, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Schechter Institute, Duke, and UJA-Federation of New York. See where our graduates went.
How to apply
Applications are handled by the Graduate School of Education, which sets deadlines, requirements, and the review process for all doctoral programs. Visit GSE Admissions for current details, or see the FAQ for what we look for in prospective students.
Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Jim Joseph Postdoctoral Fellowship supports early-career scholars working on education, religion, and Jewish life. Fellows join an active research group, pursue their own work, and take part in the intellectual life of the concentration.
Applications for the 2027-2029 Jim Joseph Postdoctoral Fellowship are now open. Apply here by December 04, 2026.
Current and recent fellows
Two fellows are in residence now, and six have completed the fellowship since 2017. They have gone on to positions at the Jewish Theological Seminary, Duke, Hebrew University, Stevens Institute of Technology, and the Center for Documentation and Counter-Extremism in Copenhagen.
