The Concentration in Education and Jewish Studies

Research at the Intersection of Education and Jewish Life

The Concentration in Education and Jewish Studies (EdJS) is an intellectual catalyst for students and scholars working at the intersection of education, Jewish Studies, and religion broadly considered. We are a global leader for research and insights on education and Jewish life around the world.

Main content start

Our work is rooted in three commitments:

Asking Big Questions
Our research revolves around questions fundamental to understanding the past, present, and future of Jewish life as it is lived and learned.

Preparing Great Researchers
Our teaching focuses on providing the highest possible quality in methodological, analytic, and conceptual training for learners at every level.

Promoting Informed Practice
Our public voice reaches teachers, clergy, and Jewish communal professionals who wish to approach their work equipped with reliable, sound information.

In the field

Active projects run from multi-year studies to focused inquiries—all using the full range of methodological and conceptual tools to ask big questions.

Publications

Structured like a research lab, students tackle projects with faculty and peers on all phases of the research and publishing process.

Strong support

Every doctoral student is fully funded through a fellowship endowed by the Jim Joseph Foundation: five years of tuition plus a stipend.

Berman Archive

We preserve the documents of 100+ years of American Jewish institutional productivity and change by hosting the Berman Archive.
